Tim Allen and Richard Karn on What It Was Like to Reunite 22 Years After ‘Home Improvement’ Finale (Exclusive)

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the premiere episode of Home Improvement, and the show’s stars are marking the occasion with a fairly wonderful new project. Tim Allen and former co-star Richard Karn have reunited for a new reality show, and the pair are looking back at what it’s like to share the screen once again.

“All of us are real close,” Allen told ET’s Nischelle Turner. “I still see Richard way too much, boy, way too much.”

“It just doesn’t feel like 30 years,” Karn added.

Allen and Karn spoke with ET on the set of their new workshop reality competition, Assembly Required, in which talented makers and DIYers from across the country compete head-to-head in at-home building competitions.

Assembly Required: Tim Allen and Richard Karn Reunite in History Competition Series – canceled + renewed TV shows

Home Improvement fans will see Tim Allen and Richard Karn together again on the small screen soon. Their new do-it-yourself competition series, Assembly Required, will arrive on the History Channel next month. They will be joined by April Wilkerson, a woodworking YouTube star.

This is not the only Home Improvement related news in recent weeks. Allen brought his Tim Taylor character back to life for a special crossover on Last Man Standing earlier this month.

History revealed more about the arrival of Assembly Required in a press release.

Home Improvement Stars Reunite for Building Competition Series on History

History is giving Home Improvement fans the next best thing to a full-blown reboot, reuniting Tool Time duo Tim Allen and Richard Karn for a building-themed reality competition series, TVLine has learned.

The 10-episode series, tentatively titled Assembly Required, will “spotlight the best and brightest builders from across the country, at their home workshops, as they compete to breathe new life into everyday household items in desperate need of fixing. This new series will push each contestant to their limits while testing their ability and ingenuity to not only rebuild it but to build it better. In each episode, Allen and Karn will also dive into the unique history around these items to celebrate the men and women who crafted them, and the techniques used.”

Karn will serve as host, executive-producing alongside Allen. Assembly Required is expected to premiere sometime in 2021.

Tim Allen may still be dreaming of a Home Improvement reboot, but in the meantime he’s working on the next best thing: a spin-off reality TV series. According to TVLine, a building-themed competition show is in the works, and both Allen and Richard “Al Borland” Karn are onboard.

The TV series, tentatively called Assembly Required, will spotlight talented builders nationwide as they “compete to breathe new life into everyday household items in desperate need of fixing” from the comfort of their home workshops. The show will consist of 10 episodes and is aiming for a 2021 premiere date. Karn will host while also executive producing alongside Allen.
