Tim Allen Says It Was ‘Emotional’ to Reprise His Home Improvement Role on Last Man Standing

Fox

Tim Allen is opening up about the emotional experience of reprising his Home Improvement role on Last Man Standing.

During a virtual chat with Entertainment Tonight ahead of the ninth and final season premiere of the Fox series, the 67-year-old actor spoke about how reprising the role was not at all what he expected.

Speaking candidly about playing both Last Man Standing’s Mike Baxter and Home Improvement’s Tim Taylor on the episode that aired Thursday night, the actor called the experience, “weird, creepy… [and] unusual.”

“It was very peculiar to do both parts, I’ll tell you that. It was challenging for me to do both parts and kind of emotional,” Allen said, before sharing that the 2003 death of Earl Hindman — who played Wilson, Allen’s onscreen neighbor in Home Improvement — played a part in heightening his feelings.

“I adored the man and we kind of brought

EP Talks Time Jump, Kristin and Ryan’s MIA Daughter, Scrapped Season 8 Finale

Last Man Standing‘s final season premiere spent little time quarantined with the Baxters before it jumped ahead to a post-COVID world, where Mike and Vanessa had not one, but two new grandchildren: Mandy and Kyle’s firstborn Sarah (played by newcomer Sophia McKinlay), and Kristin and Ryan’s second child, a daughter named Evelyn.

The latter was mentioned but not seen during Sunday’s episode, which saw the long-running Tim Allen comedy jump ahead to the year 2023 to avoid stories set during the pandemic. As showrunner Kevin Abbott previously told TVLine, “People are depressed enough without having to look for us to be depressed,” hence the decision to sidestep COVID-19. “[The time jump] allowed us to tell stories from a positive point of view while addressing the impact [the pandemic has had] on our characters,” which viewers will see more of in subsequent episodes.

How ‘Last Man Standing’ Got Permission to Use Tim Taylor Character for ‘Home Improvement’ Crossover

Fox’s “Last Man Standing” is going big in its final season, with an episode featuring Tim Allen in his leading role of Mike Baxter and reprising Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor, the iconic character he played on ABC’s “Home Improvement” for eight seasons from 1991-1999.

The bit will come in the second episode of “Last Man Standing’s” upcoming ninth season, when Vanessa hires a home improvement repairman who bears an uncanny resemblance to Mike, who is struggling with an idea for his Outdoor Man 10th Anniversary vlog. And the idea for this epic half-hour, which airs Jan. 7 on Fox, came about because the broadcast network wanted to kick off the sitcom’s final season with something flashy.

“We had already broken the first seven episodes and our intention was to have the ‘Time Flies’ [flash-forward] be the first episode. And Fox came to us and said, ‘We’d love
